然而，执政联盟中的“行动党”（ACT）党魁西莫（David Seymour）认为，条约中的部分规定已不符合现代社会所需，并可能导致毛利人与其他新西兰人之间的不公平，他因此诉请重新解释条约内容，并废除部分相关制度。
此举引发了毛利族群议员的激烈反弹，其中梅皮-克菈可就直接起身，撕毁《条约原则法案》文件，高唱毛利战歌，随后其他同阵营的议员也纷纷响应，大家开始大跳名为“哈卡”的毛利战舞，这是以往毛利族出征、出草前，会唱跳的特殊舞蹈。
